FAQs

PET SITTING

What will it cost?

Each visit is $15.00 for up to four (4) household pets.  There is an additional $5.00 charge for additional pets (up to 4 more).   Fees for farm animals will be determined according to species and number.  There is a $3.00 key pick up and return charge.

What is included in the visit?

Services will be tailored to the needs of the pets and clients.  In addition to visitation and playtime, pets will be fed, watered, brushed (if requested), and medication administered.  Cages, litter boxes will be cleaned.  As requested, lights will be rotated, mail picked up, indoor plants watered, outside feeders and birdbaths filled.

What is the length of your visit and can my family or neighbors help?

The length of time spent at each home is dependent upon the number of pets and the number of services requested.  Minimum time will be 30 minutes, with 45 minutes being the standard.  Extra time can be purchased for $5.00 for every 15 minutes over the 45 minute standard.  Areas outside the Greater Cookeville area will incur an extra mileage charge.  I would prefer that neighbors and family NOT be included in the pet care as it would be difficult to insure the safety of the pets and household if more than one person is responsible.  I do encourage you to give them my name and number should they note something requiring attention.

What clients will you NOT accept?

Due to the potential for accidents and abuse by others, we cannot accept pets who are kept outside, either free roaming or in pens.  Likewise, dogs kept on e-collars (shock) or chained are not candidates for our services.  Aggressive animals will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.  Sorry, but any pet that requires live food (snakes, iguanas, etc.) will need a different sitter.

What about pet exercising?

Please contact me regarding this service.

Why should I use Smiles and Wags for my pet service needs?

I am a professional.  This is my full time job, not a hobby or a way to make a little extra cash.  I am committed to continuing my education in animal welfare and behavior through seminars and mentoring.  All care and interaction is based on positive reinforcement principles.

How can I reserve your services?

It will be best for you to call at least 48 hours in advance, earlier for peak holiday times.  Emergencies do happen and I will do my best to accommodate clients, however,  I cannot offer services  without having an initial consultation.

TRAINING

What kind of classes do you offer?

Group classes are currently being established for basic obedience, puppy socialization, and agility.  Class participation is limited to 5 dogs.

Private lessons in your home or mine.

What method of training is used?

All training is based on current learning theory – both operant and classical conditioning.  Good behavior is reinforced by positives – treats, toys, tuggies, etc.  No, your dog will not become dependent on treats for good behavior!  Poor behaviors will be decreased by using negative punishment – removal of good things.  This is the same way as the mammals at Sea World are trained!

What will it cost?

Group classes are $50.00 for 6 weeks.

Private training is $15.00 per session.

What kind of equipment will I need?

Collar – flat buckle or martingale.  NO CHOKE OR PRONG COLLARS, PLEASE!

Leashes – one 6 foot and one 15 foot

Treats (and lots of them!) – soft, high-quality treats or a toy (Frisbee, ball)

A good, positive attitude!  (REQUIRED!)

POSITIVE CHANGES FOR YOU AND YOUR PET!
